Six of the best pubs with rooms

1] Rose & Crown, Romadkirk, Co Durham Explore Teesdale’s underrated fells and stay at the Rose & Crown, an 18th century coaching inn. The 2006 Michelin Pub of the Year excels in the dining room: Yorkshire pud with onion gravy is a highlight. The rooms range in style from old world charm to the more modern. www.rose-and-crown.co.uk

2] The Greyhound, Stockbridge, Hampshire Darron Bunn, a protégé of Marco Pierre White, runs the Greyhound’s kitchen and his food is critically acclaimed (try the Romney marsh lamb as a test). The rooms are smart, like the décor with a crackling log fire downstairs. The Test Valley offers some lovely walking. www.thegreyhound.info

3] The Glenelg Inn, Skye Travel writer Bill Bryson claims the Glenelg Inn is “an outpost of comfort and graciousness”. It offers great pub grub—especially the local venison—and terrific views from its seven rooms. There are spectacularly distracting walks along the shoreline, but pack some
anti-midge spray. www.glenelg-inn.com

4] Lamb Inn, Hindon, Wiltshire Twenty minutes drive from Salisbury, the Lamb Inn mixes relaxation, good food and congeniality in equal measure. The décor is warm and the food is market-fresh and locally-sourced. Of its 14 rooms, three have four-poster beds. www.lambathindon.co.uk

5] White Hart, Nettlebed, Oxfordshire
A modern country inn? No, it’s not a contradiction. The food is delicious, well judged, and not too showy. There are 12 contemporary bedrooms and plenty to explore in nearby Henley-on Thames. www.whitehartnettlebed.com

6] Waterside Inn, Bray, Berkshire Alain Roux’s establishment is more restaurant than pub—it has three Michelin stars to its name. As well as exceptional food, it boasts 10 individually-designed rooms and suites, plus an apartment. www.waterside-inn.co.uk
