It’s the new Porsche 911. And it’s the old Porsche 911—a case of same box, different contents. Looks-wise, you’re not going to turn many heads on the High Street—aside from a few tweaks here and there, this is the classic Carrera shape: beetle-backed rear, hooded headlamps, menacing curves. Porsche needs to be careful of course. The hardcore 911 fanclub would probably firebomb the factory if the company tinkered too heavily with the blueprint.
But under the hood it’s a different story. The new 3.6-litre Carrera and 3.8-litre Carrera engines are 5kg lighter, 20-30bhp more powerful, and most importantly in the current climate, up to 15 per cent more economical. In line with current Porsche policy, both models have 15 per cent lower carbon dioxide emissions. Petrolheads, it seems, are developing consciences, too. All that extra oomph is enhanced by a brand new PDK gearbox, a double clutch system that pre-selects the next gear more effectively than any driver. Improved brakes and a direct fuel injection make it both safer and nippier. From £63,070.
