Fern Cottage, Pucklechurch, Bristol

Winners of the Taste of the West Food & Drink Award, Fern Cottage does a mean breakfast

Breakfast is getting serious—perhaps a little too serious. You can blame the organic movement for that, everybody else does. But consider the expansion of choice. Pre-organic, B&Bs could get away with serving up a bog-standard English, complete with anaemic sausages and watery bacon, safe in the knowledge that any number of similarly priced rivals would be doing the same. Post-organic, wonderful breakfast menus, such as the one at Fern Cottage, are becoming the norm. Unless you stay for a fortnight you won't be able to sample everything, but highly recommended are the rare-breed pigs' kidneys, the home-grown, grilled tomatoes, and the potato and chive griddle cake. The Great British breakfast is back.
