Aquavit (water of life) is a potato-based drink flavoured with seeds such as caraway, dill or cumin—the herbs vary by brand. A popular brand, Linie Aquavit is shipped from Norway across the equator down to Australia and back again in oak sherry casks. This gives the drink a richer flavour.
Linie Aquavit came about by accident. A distiller attempted to market the product in Asia but it didn't sell, and the barrels were returned to Norway. On their return, the distiller noticed the drink had a richer flavour. He believed this was due to it being sloshed around the barrels on a long journey.
Served ice-cold in shot glasses, it is often enjoyed alongside a beer at lunchtime. It's very potent, with an ABV of 40 per cent, so beginners beware.
